Russian forces have been employing a tactic known as double-tapping. After having shelled one location, sometimes indiscriminately, they will purportedly wait for emergency aid, fire workers, volunteers, or journalists to arrive before shelling the location yet again. This form of attack seems to serve no purpose other than to terrorize civilians and limit emergency services in the area.
The ominous whistle and inevitable thump of a missile’s impact shake the ground and rattle the surrounding buildings. This effect is heard in an echoing chorus as the sounds reverberate off buildings which can be felt by each incoming rocket. These sounds and feelings solicit an uninvited, yet all too common, eerie and tense anticipation of inevitable devastation. Holed up and waiting for a lull in the persistence of their enemy’s daily shelling, a Ukrainian soldier lights a cigarette to pass the time.
