One of Africa’s oldest wildlife charities, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was born from one family’s passion for Kenya and its wilderness over 40 years ago, and they have since grown into one of the most respected conservation organisations in the country. They are best known for their Orphans’ Project which was the first and most successful elephant orphan rescue and rehabilitation program in the world.
The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is located in northern Kenya and provides a safe refuge for a number of important and endangered species including the critically endangered black rhino and the endangered Grevy’s zebra. Elephants, lions, giraffes and wild dogs can also be found in the wildlife sanctuary. They also run anti-poaching operations, and invest heavily in their local community through education and youth empowerment programs.
Protecting over 1.6 million acres of wilderness in the Amboseli-Tsavo-Kilimanjaro ecosystem of East Africa, Big Life Foundation works with local communities to protect nature for the benefit of all. Founded in 2010, Big Life has employed hundreds of local Maasai rangers with permanent outposts, patrol vehicles, tracker dogs and planes as part of their anti-poaching initiative. They also work to track and apprehend wildlife criminals and collaborate with local prosecutors to ensure that poachers receive appropriate punishment.
Give Directly is working to end poverty in our lifetime by giving cash directly to some of the world’s poorest households. Give Directly does not dictate how the money is spent, instead believing that those receiving it deserve the dignity to choose for themselves how best to improve their lives. Since 2009, they have given out more than US$400 million in cash directly to over one million families. From research, it was shown that the money was primarily used for things like medicine, livestock, school fees, water, solar lights, tin roofs, irrigation and to jumpstart taxi services and businesses.
Operating in seven countries across the globe, Evidence Action is a global non-profit that builds programs that scale evidence-based and cost-effective interventions to fight global poverty. They have two flagship programs, the first being Dispensers for Safe Water which installs and maintains chlorine dispensers in rural Africa. The second being the Deworm the World Initiative which partners with governments in India, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Pakistan to run school-based deworming programs. They have grown to impact over 280 million people each year.
