Empowered Women - Phung Banh
The representation of women is often either white-washed or objectified. While growing up in Vietnam, the societal norm that Asian women are expected to have pale skin in order to be seen as beautiful became apparent to me. Although this norm is not followed by all Asian women, their representation in the media, especially in East Asia, continues to reinforce this norm. To address the lack of diversity and racial discrepancies in women's representation, my work seeks to celebrate collective empowerment and highlight the beauty of different skin tones.
