Lviv, Ukraine. March 7, 2022. “As uncertainty and pain feel almost tangible in the city due to Russia's invasion of the country, a woman prays at Saints Peter and Paul Garrison Church,” photographer Joel Carillet says.
Joel Carillet is a Tennessee-based photographer and writer who documents stories from across the world. He has covered everything from the political upheaval in Egypt to beach culture in Brazil and from refugee camps in Iraq to pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain. He photographs people and the contexts in which we live.
Raised in Atlanta and Papua New Guinea, Joel went to college and graduate school in Tennessee. Shortly after his 30th birthday in 2003—and after having worked in Egypt, Palestine, Ukraine, and Washington DC—he entered the nebulous world of travel writing by boarding a flight to Beijing, from where he began a 14-month overland journey across Asia.
